Campaign Issues
My goal is to make our government truly transparent and accessible to the public. I will truly represent and carry the voice of the people to Montgomery. Government has the responsibility of educating the people on proposed legislation so that the people can make informed decisions on how they want their representative to vote. This basic principle has been lost and I intend to restore it.Â
Every piece of proposed legislation must pass a through a committee before it can be introduced in our State House. These committees are often closed to the public, comprised of lobbyists, and are directed by interests outside of our state. This process must be reformed!
Below is my position on many issues. I am always open to education and informed debate. My job will be to represent the majority while protecting the rights of the individual as required by our State and US Constitution. Despite my personal position on the issues, it will be my job to carry your voice. Please feel free to contact me regarding any issue listed below or one not listed that you would like me to address.Â
Alabama Constitution Rewrite: Opposed to the rewrite of the Alabama State Constitution which is being conducted with no public oversight or input, by private entities whose interests originate outside our state and country. This has the potential to deprive citizens of essential rights effecting our property, family, government and liberty. This will also give government the authority to raise property taxes without a vote by the people.
Cap and Trade: This policy sets a cap on the amount of CO2 that a company can emit and provides a market for the buying, selling and trading of "carbon credits" on a worldwide scale. The problem is that the industries in India, South America and Africa do not have the technology to remain below this proposed cap or the money to buy “carbon creditsâ€. The question as stated by the UN Council on Climate Change is, “How much wealth is the US and EU willing to transfer to developing nations?â€Â This is going to result in higher taxes for Americans and higher cost for goods and services. We need to oppose Cap and Trade and support sensible measures of protecting our environment.
Consumer Rights: Introduce legislation that will provide legal standing for consumers to dispute billing errors and to protect consumers from harassment by bill collectors. Impose a yearly tax on out of state debt collectors for use of our State's courts and other resources.
Education: Education is the greatest investment we as a society can make. We need to spend our tax dollars more efficiently and prevent government from having an open checkbook to use on anything in the name of education. I also support vouchers for homeschooling and private school. This will save the tax payer money spent on school construction due to overcrowding and allow more money to be spent on educational programs for our children.
Environment: I will introduce or support a bill to mandate a state-wide recycling program. We should take action to be good stewards of our environment and maintain our precious resources for future generations.
Family Rights: Introduce an equal joint-shared parenting bill allowing children of divorce to spend more than 4 days per month with their non-custodial parent. This will save $240 million to $64 billion in federal tax money, improve the social well-being of our community, and save state tax money spent dealing with the social impact of parental alienation.
Financial Security for our State: We need to take steps to ensure our financial freedom. I am exploring the feasibility for our State to mint silver and gold coins as currency in this state. By issuing these coins slightly above market cost, our state can create revenue while offering the citizens an investment option to hedge against inflation and the weakening dollar.
Gambling: I strongly oppose casino-style gambling in Alabama. The social ramifications of this type of gambling incur costs to the tax payer which are far greater than any tax revenue generated.Â
Gun Rights: I intend to introduce legislation to allow the manufacture and sale of firearms within the state to be excluded from federal regulations.
Healthcare Reform:  I support legislation aimed at eliminated frivolous lawsuits which drive health insurance costs up. I also support capping the amount that can be charged for certain tests and procedures. The last time I was in the hospital I was charged $137 for a pulse oximeter reading. This device sells for $45 at Walgreens.  Â
Property Rights: Committed to ensuring that property rights are constitutionally protected. Repeal the unconstitutional Limited Self-Governance Act which allows local government to fine property owners up to $5000 for weeds, non-operable vehicles, outside furniture it deems as junk, and whatever they deem as “rubbish†within the private property.
Separation of Church and State: This is a misinterpretation of a quote from Thomas Jefferson and only pertains to the federal government, not the State. I will support prayer in our public schools and the display of the Ten Commandments at our centers of State and local government. Â
State Sovereignty: I will introduce or support strong legislation asserting our tenth amendment right as protected by the U.S. Constitution.
Taxes: The way to stimulate the economy is to cut taxes. We are taxed to death already by state income tax, federal income tax, sales tax, property tax, gas tax, tax on phone, tax on cable, tax on electric, inheritance tax, vehicle tax, everything you can think of is taxed, double taxed and triple taxed. While unemployment rises to over 10%, our government continues to expand and increase spending by epic proportions. The solution is to shrink government. There is no reason for our government to be the largest employer in our country as government does not produce anything that can be sold.
Universal Health Care: I am strongly opposed to universal health care. This will impose taxes on health care coverage negotiated by labor unions resulting in increased cost to the employee. Our health care system is already over saturated with the aging baby boomers. There are not enough healthcare providers to handle the influx universal health care will create. It is unconstitutional for the federal government to mandate health care to the states.
